People have varying opinions about what is appropriate and inappropriate when it comes to disclosure for a travel blog. The Federal Trade Commission publishes rules and provides some best practices for writers like us to follow. In general, we feel it’s best to err on the side of providing you, our reader, information about relationships with other parties and you can decide for yourself whether that’s something you can live with or not.
Affiliate Links
In much of our travel-focused content, you’ll find buttons, ads, or text links that redirect to Amazon and other reputable online retailers and service providers. If you click on one of these affiliate links, and take action (such as purchasing a product or service, booking travel, subscribing or enrolling in something) we may earn a commission on your purchase.
The price for you is the same whether you click our link, someone else’s affillate link or search for a particular product directly on the provider’s site. That’s not to say that it’s necessarily the lowest price available anywhere on or off the internet for any given product or it’s alternatives, but we do believe it to be a fair value.
This commission revenue helps keep us in business, and ensures that we can continue to publish travel tips, reviews, how-tos, and analysis on a regular basis. It also pays for the copious amounts of coffee we run through our coffee maker every day 🙂
The inclusion of affiliate links does not influence the editorial direction of our travel coverage. If we feel something is good, we’ll say so. If, in our opinion, it’s not we’ll tell you that too. We also routinely provide possible solutions that are free (or nearly free) and direct links to smaller companies with no affiliate program if it helps us to write a more complete and useful post about a given topic.
Sponsorships
This blog at times accepts sponsorships, which are clearly disclosed and identified as such. It is our policy to only promote products or services that we ourselves have used and believe are worthy of such endorsement.
Free Products or Services
If we have received a complimentary product or service, or a discount on anything we write about, we will always disclose this information in the post. In addition, we will always give our honest opinions, findings, beliefs or experiences about those topics and products, regardless of whether or not we paid for it. Sponsors/hosts have no editorial influence on articles.
Credit Card Offers
Many (but not all) credit card offers on this site are from banks from which we receive compensation if you are approved. Compensation does not impact placement in content. We do not include all possible offers from card issuers but instead focus on offers that provide airline, hotel or other travel-related benefits. Credit card issuers each have their own credit issuing criteria and some cards with travel benefits may require a higher credit score/profile for approval. As you might expect, we have no influence over specific banking policies and whether or not you are approved for a particular card.
